Pattern & Home is a brand that values timeless design by using natural elements, tones and colours in our artwork that can all be found in nature. However, as an artist and designer I do always look to trends that are surfacing locally and around the world to add a sense of playfulness and freshness to our collections. If you’ve been following us on Instagram you would have seen some teasers to our upcoming collection of work focusing on the beautiful forms and shapes of sea shells. And for this collection I have turned to the Dulux Colour Forecast 2025, to devise a palette of colours to compliment the natural tones of the shells, be exclusively on trend in 2025, and yet remain classic, timeless and nature inspired.
Let’s take a look at the 3 colour palettes that Dulux have released. I must say, this is my favourite year of colours yet – the moment they said ‘buttery yellow’, I was sold!
But first – what is the Dulux Colour Forecast?
Every year, since 1999, the team at Dulux Australia has presented an upcoming colour trend based on local and global research. It’s an important trend to remain aware of if you are in the design world, renovating your home, or simply looking for on trend inspiration to update your living space for the year ahead.
Colour and Communications manager at Dulux, Andrea Lucena-Orr says of this years’ forecast:
‘One of the most significant shifts this year is the increase in warm neutrals across the three palettes. During uncertain times we often see a move towards muted colours and calming pastels that help make us feel grounded and provide a sense of relief from everyday stresses.’
Let’s explore these three palettes.
The Emerge Palette
This palette of pastels is both uplifting and joyful yet does not overwhelm as some bright colours can do. The colours are gentle, calm, and inviting, an optimistic nod to the promise of a brighter future.
The ultimate combination of colours I see in this palette is 'Piglet', 'Lemon Blast', and 'Terracota Chip'. These colours maintain a sense of grounding through their earthy undertones and allow the use of colour in a subtle way. Get ready to see these three feature in the upcoming shell collection in early 2025! Explore the full 'Emerge' Dulux colour palette here.
The Still Palette
This palette is all about embracing slow living. It’s filled with neutrals and nature inspired tones, that are designed to be paired with natural fibres and textures in the home to create a true place of serenity. There are gorgeous neutrals in this palette such as the classic ‘Antique White USA’, ‘Clay Pipe’ and ‘Studio Cream’, juxtaposed against deep muted greens, blues and rich earth tones. The Recollect Palette
Dulux describes this palette as ‘sophisticated personality’. It’s moody but traditional and draws on colours from vintage and heritage styles. There is a richness to this palette that is unlike anything we have seen trending in mainstream Australian design for a while, but it’s definitely hot in the design world and examples of this palette is seen in projects across the globe.
This palette sees the celebration of deep purples, rich burgundies and olive greens. If you don’t like to go too wild on your walls, these colours can instead be incorporated into your design through fabrics, art and décor. For that reason, I have also selected from the Recollect palette ‘Auburn Flair’ and ‘Plum Sauce’ to feature in our upcoming shell collection. Giving you an easy way to bring these rich tones into your house, without having to lift a paintbrush! Explore the full 'Recollect' Dulux colour palette here.

How you can incorporate colour trends in your home in a timeless way.
We all know how trends work, in one minute out the next. But incorporating trends into your home in a smart and tasteful way can keep things exciting, fresh and current. There are lots of ways you can do this and not have to repaint your house in a few years time.
-
Choose neutrals and muted tones for your walls
If you stick to neutral and muted tones on your walls you will be able to get longer out of them. If you think back about 5 years ago we were all painting our homes in shades of cool grey. Many of us are still rocking those cool grey walls! The wonderful thing about neutrals though is they pair nicely with lots of other colours. So you can change out cushions, rugs and décor items to follow new colour trends without repainting walls or needing to do any drastic renovations.
-
Source décor items that bring these trending colours in
The wonderful news about colour trends is they aren’t just seen in the paint tins. These trends influence designs across all industries, including surface pattern design, art, and product design. If you are a keen shopper, you would have probably already seen these warm colours and rich burgundy and purple tones on products from many retailers. To keep things long lasting, and unique to your own style and aesthetic, buy these new items when they speak to you, and you truly like them. By that I mean, don’t just buy because everyone else has one, buy it when it makes you happy, when it ‘sparks joy’ as Marie Kondo would say. By following this simple design principle of bringing into your home that which lights you up, you will always create not just a home but a haven for yourself and your family.

In Summary
For 2025 we can expect to see a move towards warmer earth tones and deep rich colours, such as burgundy, purple, and dark olive greens. These colours have somewhat of a historical appeal, reminiscent of bygone eras with a level of sophistication and drama. It won't all be moody hues though, as we see these deep shades complimented by muted pastels and warm neutrals, that provide a sense of joy and light.
Overall, the focus is on creating spaces that feel both grounding and relaxing. Creating your personal haven has never been more important, as uncertainty envelopes the world we live in, what we can control is our immediate environment, and the decisions we make in that space can impact our lives daily! So whether you plan on doing a complete home or room makeover, or just adding some new pieces to freshen up your space, take joy in the process of making your own storybook home.
